 | It was towards the end of 1925 that the first Simba began production at the Brasseries du Katanga site in Lubumbashi (formerly Elisabethville), with a capacity of 40,000 bottles per month! This beer was born from the initiative of numerous Belgian colonists working in Katanga who dreamed of having their own national drink in Africa. In early 1926, the first Simba beers were launched and were an immediate and resounding success. It quickly became necessary to expand the facilities, and in 1931 a second brewery was opened in Likasi, increasing bottling capacity to 200,000 bottles per month. In 1950, the combined production capacity of the two breweries reached 1,250,000 bottles per month, or 110,000 hectoliters of beer sold annually. At that time, Tembo and Mamba, a household beer that is no longer produced, were also produced. In 1994, the Interbrew Group sold all of its shares in its breweries in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) to the B.G.I. Group. (Société des Brasseries et Glacières Internationales), a group owned by Mr. Pierre Castel. The company changed its name to Brasseries Simba. In December 2012, a state-of-the-art factory opened in Beni, North Kivu Province, producing beers and soft drinks for the eastern part of the DRC. Currently operating, BRASIMBA has 9 distribution centers and 2 production sites in Lubumbashi and Beni. In Swahili, Simba means lion, Tembo means elephant, and Mamba means crocodile.
